How to extract a watertight mesh from complex CT data

For some types of scanned data files it can be difficult to create a watertight mesh from the point cloud due to irregularities, non-uniform surfaces and organic shapes. Measuring the volume inside such a scan can also be a difficult task.
The goal of this technical tip is isolate a section from a scan of a bone, create a watertight mesh from it, and measure its volume.
